Diamond fluorescence: a misunderstood property that is rarely worth worrying about
Diamond fluorescence is listed on GIA grading reports and has generated a disproportionate amount of buyer anxiety. The conversation in most jewellery retail environments treats fluorescence as a negative — something to avoid, a defect to disclose — which does not reflect the reality of how it behaves in practice.
What fluorescence is
Fluorescence is a property of some diamonds that causes them to emit visible light when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Under a UV lamp or in strong direct sunlight (which contains significant UV), a fluorescent diamond may glow, most commonly blue, occasionally yellow or orange.
Approximately 25–35% of diamonds exhibit some degree of fluorescence, ranging from Faint through Medium to Strong and Very Strong on the GIA scale. The majority of fluorescent diamonds exhibit blue fluorescence.
Whether it matters
In ordinary indoor lighting — including most artificial lights, most office lighting, and most evening environments — fluorescence is completely invisible. You cannot see it. The stone looks identical to a non-fluorescent stone of the same grade.
In strong UV light — certain nightclubs, some fluorescent tube lighting, very intense direct sunlight — a stone with Strong or Very Strong blue fluorescence may appear to glow slightly. Whether this is a problem depends entirely on your perspective. Some buyers find it neutral or interesting. A small number find it undesirable.
A specific concern — that Strong fluorescence makes stones appear “milky” or “oily” under normal light — applies to approximately 0.2% of fluorescent diamonds. These stones, sometimes called “over-blue” in the trade, have a hazy appearance unrelated to their fluorescence grade and should be avoided. They can be identified visually. The solution is to inspect the stone rather than to refuse all fluorescent stones on principle.
The pricing implication
Because fluorescence has developed a reputation — undeserved in most cases — as a negative property, fluorescent diamonds are typically priced 5–15% below non-fluorescent stones of equivalent grade. A D colour, VS1, Excellent cut diamond with Strong Blue fluorescence costs less than an identical stone without fluorescence, despite no practical difference in appearance under normal conditions.
I occasionally source fluorescent stones where the visual performance is excellent and the grade-for-grade price advantage is meaningful. I always disclose fluorescence to clients. Almost universally, clients who understand what fluorescence actually means find the concern disproportionate to the discount available.
When to avoid fluorescence
There are two situations where I am more cautious. First, if the client has specifically requested a D or E colour stone for reasons of optical purity and will be comparing it closely against white backgrounds — the milky risk, however small, is worth avoiding at that investment level. Second, if I cannot inspect the specific stone in person and verify that it does not exhibit the haziness that affects a small number of strongly fluorescent diamonds.
Outside these cases, I treat fluorescence as a neutral or mildly positive property, not a defect.
