On diamond cut: the single decision that determines almost everything
Of the four Cs — cut, colour, clarity, carat — cut is the one that most directly determines whether a diamond is beautiful in daily life. A well-cut stone in a modest colour and clarity grade will consistently outperform a poorly cut stone in theoretically superior grades. This is not a subtlety; it is visible and significant.
Cut is also the most frequently misunderstood C, partly because it is conflated with shape (round, oval, emerald) and partly because its importance is systematically undersold by sellers who profit more from carat weight than from cut quality.
What cut actually measures
Cut grade assesses three properties of the finished stone: proportions, symmetry, and polish.
Proportions determine how light travels through the stone. A diamond with ideal proportions takes incoming light, refracts it through the pavilion facets, and returns it through the table directly toward the viewer’s eye. This is called brilliance — the white light return — and it is what makes a diamond appear bright. A stone cut too shallow allows light to pass straight through the pavilion and out the bottom, producing a glassy, lifeless appearance. A stone cut too deep traps light in the pavilion, producing a dark centre and suppressed return.
Symmetry affects both the optical pattern of the stone and its consistency under different lighting conditions. Excellent symmetry means the facets align precisely — the star facets, upper girdle facets, and pavilion mains are all exactly where they should be, producing a uniform scintillation pattern. Poor symmetry produces uneven flashes and a stone that looks different from different angles rather than consistently beautiful.
Polish affects the surfaces of each facet. A well-polished facet transmits light cleanly. A surface with polish marks or surface graining introduces micro-interference that reduces light return.
The GIA cut grade system
For round brilliant diamonds, the GIA assigns a cut grade: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor. The GIA does not assign cut grades to fancy shapes (ovals, cushions, etc.) on the same basis, which is one of the reasons fancy shapes require visual assessment rather than simple report-reading.
For rounds, I source Excellent cut as the default. Very Good is acceptable when budget requires a trade-off and the specific stone’s visual performance has been confirmed by video review. I do not propose Good or below for the principal stone in a ring at the level I work at.
Why fancy shapes are more complex
The lack of a standardised cut grade for ovals, cushions, pears, and emerald cuts is a genuine complication in the market. Two GIA-graded 1ct oval diamonds, both reported as VS1 G colour, can look completely different — one with a severe bow-tie shadow, one without. The report does not capture this. Only viewing the stone captures this.
This is one of the reasons I inspect every stone I source rather than ordering from a specification sheet. For fancy shapes, I assess the length-to-width ratio (which affects how the stone appears on the finger), the presence and severity of the bow-tie effect, the symmetry of the outline, and the overall optical performance. These assessments require seeing the stone, not reading about it.
The simple rule
If you are buying a diamond and budget requires trade-offs across the four Cs, cut is the last place to trade. Drop colour from G to H. Drop clarity from VS1 to VS2. Choose 0.9ct instead of 1.0ct. But do not compromise cut quality. A well-cut diamond of modest grade is a beautiful diamond. A poorly cut diamond of any grade is a disappointing one.
