How to think about your engagement ring budget

No sensible answer to the question “how much should I spend on an engagement ring?” begins with a formula based on your salary. The two-months rule was created by De Beers to sell more diamonds and has no logical basis for any individual’s situation. Ignore it entirely.

Here is a more useful framework.

What the budget actually buys at each level

Under €2,000: a ring with a small natural diamond (under 0.4ct in common quality grades) or a more prominent lab-grown diamond, in 14ct gold from a production manufacturer. This is a serviceable ring and there is no shame in it. At this level, you are buying material and manufacturing, not design.

€2,000–€4,000: the range where the stone improves meaningfully — a 0.5–0.8ct natural diamond in better cut and colour grades, or a 1ct-plus lab-grown. You begin to have access to independent designer work at this level, though the bespoke commission model does not typically start here.

€4,000–€8,000: the entry level for a well-made signature ring from a working designer. A 0.7–1.2ct natural diamond in good quality grades, or a larger lab-grown stone. The ring is a designed object at this level, not just an assemblage of components.

€8,000–€15,000: 1–1.5ct natural diamonds in excellent grades, or unusual stone shapes and specifications, with more complex settings and significant bespoke design work. This is the range where the commission becomes a real conversation between client and designer.

Above €15,000: large natural diamonds, rare stones, fully bespoke work with multiple design iterations. Commissions at this level involve stone sourcing that may take weeks and production timelines of twelve weeks or more.

The most important budget insight

Within any budget, the single best allocation decision is to spend as much as possible on cut quality and stone integrity, and as little as possible on carat weight beyond what is visually compelling on the actual hand. The difference between a 0.9ct and 1.0ct diamond is approximately €800–1,200. The visual difference, on the finger, is under half a millimetre. That money spent on cut and colour quality instead produces a ring that looks substantially better than the alternative.

The category of stone that represents the worst value in this market is: large carat weight, compromised cut, mediocre colour. This is the configuration that makes budgets feel inadequate — because you are spending heavily on a number while sacrificing the properties that make a stone beautiful.

Lab-grown as a budget tool

If you want a larger stone than your budget allows with natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds are the legitimate answer. A 1.2ct lab-grown diamond in G colour, VS1, excellent cut currently costs approximately what a 0.6ct natural diamond of the same quality costs. This is not a compromise in terms of appearance; the stone looks like a 1.2ct diamond because it is one. It is a compromise only in terms of geological origin and secondary market value.

The one budget principle I would emphasise

Do not spend money you do not have. The pressure to meet an imaginary social standard — to produce a ring that demonstrates commitment through its price tag — is real but destructive. The meaning of the ring is entirely independent of its cost. A carefully chosen €3,000 ring is a better expression of thought and care than a €7,000 ring selected carelessly. Spend what you can spend comfortably, spend it well, and let the ring be what it is.
